Once again lunacy reigned at the increasingly popular Loony Poets performance on the December Full Moon Solstice, held in the Top Shed at the Kuranda Amphitheatre. With an informal open mic style approach, all are welcome to take to the stage and entertain the local Kuranda community.
Amidst a lavish setting with a background of art, a beautiful stage and a comfy chair to read from the poetry, stories and songs were presented in the inimitable Kuranda style, with Di Russo acting in the role of announcer.
Many special guests made their appearances including Peter McCabe, Gwain Barker and Twiggy. With the main Loony’s David Jones known as Quiffy, Morgan Hurst, and aided by Phil Free, Isaac and Tegan Crowley, Di Russo, Carl Neale and Hacka; the poetry and stories reflected the diversity and humor of this alternative lifestyle community. There was also a special tributary reading of poems written by Lisa Crowley, beautifully performed by her children Isaac and Tegan.
Special musical guests for the evening were Dave Cooke on guitar and didgeridoo, Debi Robinson playing originals on mandolin and Bosko & Honey the ukulele duo. Bosko & Honey, Kuranda residents, were warmly welcomed back from their recent tour and entertained the crowd with awesome ukulele playing and a medley of their own original music.
Resident Loony Solar Moon was painted by Marc Steiner while playing guitar and singing original songs for the audience. As well as a live painting happening local artist Amber Gill’s paintings were exhibited around the venue. Coconut weavings by Kitty Clignett and wire sculptures by Peter from “Bent and Twisted Designs” were also displayed around the venue. All artworks, designs and fiber pieces are available for sale from the artists.
The next gathering of Loony Poets will be on February 18ths Full Moon and as it is close to Valentines bring along your funny anecdotes, poems and stories to share. To aid in the evenings theme we would request the audience to dress in red.
